Feng Shui for Beginners: A Brief Guide To Get You Started

I often am asked to explain what Feng Shui is and how it is beneficial to my clients and their families. To help better understand the benefits of Feng Shui, I’ve put together this overview of Feng Shui for beginners. I’ve also included a few ways to apply Feng Shui principles and practices in your life easily.

What Does Feng Shui mean?

The ancient art of Feng Shui is a practice that has been around for more than 5000 years and one that is still incredibly relevant today. It can be applied at Home, in Business, and even in Real Estate.

Feng Shui for Beginners – Let’s start at the beginning. Feng Shui translates to “wind and water.” Pronounced fung shway, it’s the ancient Chinese art form of placement. Ultimately, what Feng Shui does is promote the flow and movement of good energy, or Chi (sometimes written as Qi), in the space that you occupy. It does this in several different ways (see below). But Feng Shui is not just about where you place your sofa or bed. Feng Shui works to create balance in all areas of your life, including Health, Wealth, Career and Relationships.

It might seem magical and mystical, but the effects of Feng Shui are proven to work. Studies show that using Feng Shui’s principles to rearrange your office or bedroom has resulted in greater productivity and better sleep patterns. It’s important to note that there are different schools of Feng Shui. As a Classical Feng Shui Master, I focus on the more traditional principles of this art form.

How Feng Shui works

The main aim of Feng Shui is to balance Chi using the five elements – Fire, Wood, Water, Metal and Earth – and colour schemes. As a Feng Shui Master, I provide my clients with advice and guidance about arranging their space, placing these elements, and incorporating colour to promote energy flow. You may be wondering why we often feel a direct connection to our Homes and possessions and why you can sense when changes have been made. It’s because the same energy we have in our Homes is also inside of us.In short, how we decorate and layout our Home can have an immediate and distinct effect on every aspect of our lives.

The Five Elements of Feng Shui

Where and how the five elements interact in your home will affect the flow of Chi and influence your wellbeing. Here is a quick overview of the characteristics and associations of each element:

Element #1: Fire

  • The element of heat, summer, and enthusiasm; nature at its peak of growth, and warmth in human relationships
  • Represented by the colour red and a pointed, triangled shape
  • Associated with dynamic, energetic, passionate, enterprising energies due to its upward motion

Element #2: Wood

  • The element of spring; the creative urge to achieve
  • Represented by the colour green and a rectangle shape
  • Associated with the capacity to look forward, plan and make decisions, hence growth and expansion

Element #3: Water

  • The ultimate yin; quiet, cold; representing the resting time of winter
  • Governs the balance between fear of being exploited and the desire to dominate
  • Represented by the colour black/ blue and a wave-like shape

Element #4: Metal

  • The force of gravity, the minerals within the earth, the patterns of the heavenly bodies and the powers of electrical conductivity and magnetism
  • Energy is consolidating and with inward movements, like a flower closing its petals
  • Represented by the colour white, gray and metallic shades and round shapes

Element #5: Earth

  • The element of harvest time, abundance, nourishment, fertility
  • Regarded as central to balance and the place where energy becomes downward in movement, a change of seasons
  • Represented by the colour yellow and a square shape, Earth’s motion is patient, reliable, logical, governed by service and duty to others.

To work out the best places for these elements in your home in Classical Feng Shui, creating an energy map of the space is essential. This map, called a Bagua, defines the eight areas of your home, with each area being responsible for influencing a particular area of your life.

The Bagua Areas of Feng Shui

Meena is sitting on a chair with the bagua map

The eight Bagua areas each relate to an area of your life and wellbeing. They also link to one of the five elements.

  1. South – Fame and Reputation
  2. Southwest – Love and Marriage
  3. West – Children, Creativity and New Beginnings
  4. Northwest – Helpful people and Travel
  5. North – Career and Life’s Journey
  6. Northeast – Knowledge, Wisdom and Meditation
  7. East – Family and Community
  8. Southeast – Wealth and Prosperity

The compass direction of your front door defines where each of these areas fall in your home (for example, if your door is facing west, your energy will focus on Children, Creativity, and New Beginnings). By discovering where each room of your home falls on the Bagua, you can place the elements accordingly and add supporting colour schemes to enhance the flow of Chi.

How Colour Schemes Affect Feng Shui

The use of colour in Feng Shui is significant, particularly when you realize that colour itself is how we perceive different light waves. Light is also energy, as with everything else. This means colour is also energy and has a significant effect on our wellbeing, just as the elements do. In Feng Shui, different colours carry different types of energy and interact with the five elements. Specific colours work best with each of the elements (for example, white with Metal and black for Water) and, in turn, the different Bagua areas based on the Compass calculation (the actual, magnetic and compass direction (course, bearing) by a given direction, magnetic declination and deviation).

Decluttering and Feng Shui

One of the critical aspects of Feng Shui is the placement and position of items around your Home. This is something that has been well popularised over the years. It’ll also be the first thing that most people will think of when learning about Feng Shui. Yes, it’s worth knowing certain things, but the quickest and most straightforward advice I could offer to a beginner is this – declutter your space. It’s the first, most crucial step you can take towards introducing good energy flow through your living space. When you’re ready to place the elements and colour schemes according to your Feng Shui study, the area will be prepared to receive the positive energy.I hope you’ve found this simple explanation of the art of Feng Shui helpful.

How to Prepare your Home for a Feng Shui Consultation

A Feng Shui consultation is about adjusting and improving energy flow around your home to create better balance in your life. Small changes, like adding a mirror to a space or putting up some art, right through to more significant adjustments, can make a world of difference. But it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where I come in! Here’s how to prepare your home for a Feng Shui Consultation, so you get the most benefits possible.

Before Your Consultation

A successful consultation is about good preparation. So, before we meet, I ask for some information from you.

First, there’s a questionnaire to complete, which helps me focus on the areas of importance during our consultation. The questions ask for pertinent information, such as the residents’ birth data and any questions or concerns you might have at this point for me to address in the study.

I’ll also ask for a copy of your house plan or floor plan. This is a document you can get from City Hall if you don’t already have one. Some charge a small fee, others give it for free, depending on your location.

Using this information, along with compass readings which are an important part of Classical Feng Shui, I make my calculations and identify areas of imbalance among the five Feng Shui energies in any living environment before overlaying it on the floor plan. From here, I then produce a report with my recommendations and plan your in-home visit or online meeting.

In-Person Consultations

The next step is to schedule a meeting at your home.

Home consultations vary in length, depending on your needs, questions and the size of your home. But, to give you some idea, it lasts for a minimum of two hours.

I come prepared with your customized binder, which includes a detailed written report and Personal Trigrams of all primary members of the household (to suggest your personal best directions and power colors, etc). I do a walkthrough of your home with you, detailing my findings and recommendations in your case study. I aim to give you a clear plan to execute to improve the energy flow in your home. I expect you’ll have questions, so this is the time to ask me anything you want to know. I want to be sure it all makes sense to you before I leave.

Your consultation ends with a meditation and Energy Clearing Ritual. This is a complementary addition to Feng Shui consultations. It helps to balance and clear negativity and stagnant energy from your home accumulated over time.

Online Consultations

The internet has made it possible for me to extend my Feng Shui consultations to you virtually. Online consultations are an obvious choice for people who are not comfortable with me coming into their home right now. Mostly, that means my services are accessible to you, even if you’re not in the lower mainland of BC.

An online consultation works much like a home consultation, with a few differences. As before, I sent you a questionnaire and asked you for your home plan. I also ask you to send photographs and a walkthrough video of your home. Don’t worry, I give you full instructions on how to do this when you book in.

Once I’ve put together your case study, you’ll receive a detailed report outlining all areas of your living space and also all the household members’ Personal Trigrams. I schedule a Zoom meeting with you to go through everything. This is the equivalent of me walking through your home. I guide you through the recommendations I’ve made, and you can ask questions as we talk.

The online consultation doesn’t include a space clearing ceremony but I do guide you through it, which makes you better equipped to do it whenever you feel your home needs it in the future.

What You’ll Get

The Feng Shui consultation gives you lots of detailed information to help the energy flow around your home.

You’ll receive:

  • A full, detailed written report, either given to you during our visit or emailed to you to read at your leisure.
  • Personal Trigrams for all the primary members of the household.
  • Feng Shui tips for each room of your house.
  • Recommendations on choosing appropriate colours, how to arrange your furniture and what decor will enhance different areas of your life. Areas of focus can be anything from health to wealth, career, fame and business relationships, love, family, travel and self-cultivation.
  • Recommendations on how to clear your clutter and improve the flow of energy around your home.
  • Useful affirmations and guidance you can use alongside your new Feng Shui space and intentions.
  • Extra supporting materials and resources. There’s also additional assistance to declutter or beautify your space or adjust to new energetic flows or intentions. This is available as an hourly service.
  • Responses to any questions you might have following your consultation. You can email or message me, and I’ll be happy to help if your in-depth report does not cover it.
  • And, for face-to-face consultations, you’ll also receive the Space Clearing Ceremony, where I use Zenergy Chimes, Sage, sound and ritual to bring in fresh, new energy into your home.

So, if you’re ready to book your Feng Shui consultation, do get in touch with me and look forward to improved energy flow in your home.

Everything you need to know about Salt Water Cure

Do you ever get that sense that there’s negative energy in a room in your home? Don’t ignore those instincts or feelings. It’s worth placing a Salt Water Cure in your home to remove that negative energy, allowing the good Chi to flow through again. Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about Salt Water Cure. You’ll learn what it is and how and where to place it in your home or office space.

What is a Salt Water Cure, and what does it do?

As the name suggests, a Salt Water Cure is a powerful cure that works to disperse and absorb any negative energy from wherever it’s placed. This could be in your home or office, wherever you feel there’s negative energy that requires removing.

Many ancient cultures state that salt has cleansing properties. It’s also thought to ward off negative energy. Combined with water, it becomes a powerful cleansing tool. The addition of the metal coins helps to stimulate a chemical reaction, allowing the negative energy to be dispersed and absorbed.

Salt Water Cure must be replaced every 12 months or at the beginning of the Feng Shui New Year in February when we renew the remedies in Classical Feng Shui. In some cases, it may build up an overflow of salt crystals from the top, depending on how much negative energy it receives. Keep an eye on the container; if it looks like it has done a lot of work and has become unmanageable in growth, then replace it with a new one.

Salt Water Cure

A Salt Water Cure consists of Himalayan Salt, which should be the highest quality you can find, a glass container, six brass I-Ching coins, and water. For the best results, the coins should come from a prosperous Dynasty, be cleared of any negative energy, and be empowered with positive energy.

You should repeat this practice each year at the beginning of February when the remedies in Classical Feng Shui are renewed. It may be that your Salt Water Cure creates a significant build-up of salt crystals due to the amount of negative energy it is absorbing. If it starts to become unmanageable as a result, you can replace it sooner.

Where to place your Salt Water Cure

Choosing a location for your Salt Water Cure is vital as negative energy moves from year to year. The location of the annual stars can help to determine this.

Once you know your location, place the cure somewhere safe, where it can’t be knocked, moved, or tampered with. This helps to avoid disturbing any of the accumulated negative energy. I recommend placing it behind a sofa, a decorative object, or a full plant, but ensure it’s somewhere you can easily access it so you can add water as needed. It’s worth placing the cure in a dish or earthenware, or ceramic planter, as sometimes it can overflow onto the floor. Keep the container open and uncovered. Don’t place it inside a cupboard or enclosed space.

Disposing of your Salt Water Cure

It would be best if you gave proper care and attention to the disposal of your Salt Water Cure at the end of the 12-month period. This is because it will have absorbed and built up a lot of negative energy in that time. You shouldn’t clean the coins or bowl and reuse them. Instead, dispose of the entire cure properly and start with a fresh new Salt Water Cure. The best way is to discard it entirely in the recycle bin. That way, you are literally throwing out the negative energy that the cure has removed from your home or office!

Computers and Smartphones in Feng Shui

If you work from home or use your smartphone or computer in your business, they may help or hinder your efforts to be more efficient and effective. Most of us use these devices in our everyday life and jobs. Each moment spent on the device can bring about bad Chi and negative energy into our environment.

No one wants to wake up and dread the work day ahead of them so using Feng Shui to help de-clutter and de-stress our devices can be an amazing way to encourage those positive emotions in our daily routine.

Laptop and phones

By simply applying the following tips, it can help you and your subconscious mind attract new possibilities and opportunities for wealth, growth and fame.

  • Keep the Phone and Computer files clutter-free, delete old phone numbers that no longer serve you, clear out old, rarely used emails and files and stay current. When information is hard to find, we get frustrated and this clouds our interactions and the ability to think clearly. By clearing out old information, you create room for new clients and business to come your way. That also goes for the Trash Folder…once they’re deleted, they still haven’t left. By keeping the recycle bin clear, you will truly remove the files and extra clutter.
  • In the same way that you want to have plenty of free space in your surroundings for the Chi to flow freely, you also need to have ample space and memory on your device. Sluggish, slow moving Chi without ample free space is not conducive for new opportunities to come into your inbox.
  • Keep your screen clean to allow new experiences, people and prospects to enter in your life and business. When its full of dirty, greasy fingerprints, it will prevent you from seeing the opportunities that are coming your way.
  • Make sure the desktop image you choose is inspirational and welcoming. Waterfalls, Family Pictures, Vacation spot photos you love and pictures of calm water/beaches all make great images to keep in front of you. Choose vibrant colors to encourage clarity, energy and positivity.
  • Attempt to open your devices every day for at least few minutes for Chi to flow as it needs to be fresh. Stale Chi can get trapped and can’t escape just like when we open windows to let in fresh air.
  • Choose a password that inspires you as this is a simple yet highly effective way to send your higher self a positive reminder. Change it regularly to generate fresh and positive energy.
  • Protection is an important key in Feng Shui and that also applies to your devices. When you take protective actions to enhance your peace of mind and diminish your vulnerability, you are strengthening the positive Chi. Make sure your information is protected by installing protective software and virus detectors.

Personal Trigram

Have you heard of the term “Personal Trigram” in Feng Shui and confused with what it is? Your Personal Trigram is based on your gender and date of birth and is used to determine your compatibility with a building, as well as your most auspicious direction and directions to avoid. It is your personal blueprint because it is determined from your birth and the key to how you’re influenced by Earth’s magnetic pull your entire lifetime.

Finding your personal Feng Shui element can allow you to bring things into your environment that will feed you to thrive and help you to position yourself in directions that will improve flow. Essence Colours are colours that feed you. For example, if you’re a number 9, then your element is fire. Wood is the element that feeds fire, so bringing in little amounts of red/sunlight, red colours and wood or plants will help support you in your home – red because it represents the fire element. Your essence colours also help to support your energy and are the best colours for things that touch your body, such as clothing, bed sheets, even the colour of your car. Also bring in wood and green colours, as wood feeds fire!

Your Personal Best Direction is your best location for prosperity and great fame and it’s recommended to have your back face this direction for productivity. When setting up your desk both at home or in the office, position yourself with your back to this direction, as well as in the living room and dining room and you will be constantly supported while sitting. If you want to improve sleep, put the headboard of your bed facing the best sleeping direction.

Personal Trigram for Feng Shui

Using your preferred directions can help give you a boost. It can manifest in your personal life or give you a professional edge. Many people report getting better sleep or being calmer when they utilize their best directions. As well, success in business and being seen as more trust worthy and likeable can also be the pay off in making these subtle changes to how you position yourself at work and home. Intrigued?

Your Personal Trigram Report consists of…..

  • Your Essence Colours; Your power colour to wear when doing presentations, going for job interviews, an important meeting, social media marketing etc. A wallet in this colour will support your finances.
  • The Colours that feed you; i.e. Wood feeds Fire so you would use Green to enhance the Red.
  • The Colours and Elements that deplete you; in the above example, it would be Earth and Water so stay away from Yellow/Brown, Blue/Black colours.
  • Direction Group you belong to; East or West Groups (8 Mansion Theory)
  • Your Qualities outlined as per your Trigram
  • Your optimum personal best direction. This is the best location to support Prosperity and Great Fame so have your back face this direction for productivity, studying or concentrating in solitude. Best location for the main breadwinner of the home to enter in.
  • The best location correlated with your Great Health and Good Fortune. Know which location is best for the parents/elders of the home. Have your back face this direction while eating for better nutritional digestion.
  • Your best location for Family Harmony, Good Public Relationships and Longevity. Know which is the good health direction for the children in the home. This area improves family relationships and prevents arguments.
  • Your best sleeping orientation for Overall Harmony, Clarity (decision making) and Peace. Discover the best direction to place your headboard (so that the crown of your head faces this direction) to receive a good night’s sleep. Sleeping in this direction also helps with fertility.

Close Look TV Interview

I was honoured to be invited to speak about classical feng shui on-air with Shelly Singh, host of Close Look TV, a popular Punjabi TV series on Shaw Multicultural Channel. I took the opportunity to share in Punjabi how to invite positive energy into a space.

During the interview, I was asked many questions pertaining to this topic:

  • How is Classical Feng Shui different from other modalities?
  • What is a Luopan Compass?
  • How do you know if the energy is flowing or blocked?
  • Why is it that sometimes, when you move from one Home or Business to another, the energy doesn’t feel the same anymore, whether it’s health, relationships or prosperity?
  • Who is the right candidate for Residential or Business Feng Shui Service, and what is the procedure?

I invite you to watch the episode in its entirety for my responses to the above questions and an overview of the five classical Feng Shui elements: Wood, Metal, Earth, Fire, and Water. Alternatively, you can view the interview here. You can also visit Close Look TV by visiting their website.

You can also learn more about my smudging ceremony, why energy clearing is important, and what my process includes (Zenergy Chimes, Sage, Palo Santo, and Rose Water).
